Mental Health

Muslim youth are constantly faced with the everyday pressures of maintaining an Islamic identity in an increasingly secular society. With the added stress that comes with school or work, many find themselves facing anxiety and depression on a regular basis. Though Islam promotes the notion that mental health is something to be preserved and cared for, the topic has remained a taboo within our communities for far too long. Our hope is to provide support that is comforting while also providing the necessary resources to access further support if needed.

Drugs Including Alcohol

High school and college is a first time for many things. While it can be the gateway that opens doors to many great blessings in life, it can also be the means by which many youth fall into poor habits. Drugs and alcohol are so common among teens and young adults, they seem impossible to avoid. Given the relative abundance, most Muslim youth will likely face this challenge at some point in their life. As an organization, it is our hope to provide support to those both struggling to refrain and those who are attempting to let go.

Relationships

Mass media and advertising are constantly enticing people to engage in their every desire. Sexual activities are often times encouraged as means of discovery. For Muslim youth that hope to avoid any actions that fall within this realm, ranging from dating to pre-marital intercourse, the avenues to discuss these issues are very limited. Zameel aims to relinquish any existing barriers and have honest conversations with those seeking help in these matters.

Bullying

Studies have shown that 42% of Muslim youth report experiencing some form of bullying from either peers or teachers as a result of their faith. It can be very difficult to practice ones faith openly and confidently without an existing support structure that surrounds you. Some may choose to suppress their feelings, while others may internalize them, causing internal conflicts that arise from the constant defamation of Islam in society. Many face rejection and bullying within their homes and communities as well, which can incur an even greater psychological burden. Our hope is to support youth facing this incredible battle.
